Sterile Water for Irrigation

  • Sterile water for irrigation is a sterile, hypotonic, nonpyrogenic irrigating fluid.
  • It contains no antimicrobial or bacteriostatic agents or added buffers with a pH = 5.7 (5.0-7.0)
  • Sterile water can be used to lavage a wound to remove gross contamination (eg dirt, sand) and can also be mixed with cleaning solutions (chlorhexidine, iodine) at appropriate dilution rates to create a sterile solution suitable for cleaning wounds.
